We Believe In Hard Work

Utah Is Growing. Not Everyone Is Getting Ahead.

Utah’s economy ranks among the strongest in the nation. But strength on paper doesn’t mean stability at home.

  • 91%

of Utah renters can’t afford the median home.

  • 153%

increase in income needed to buy that home: $58k (2016) to $147k (2026).

  • 56%

of Utah employers say lack of relevant experience is the top hiring barrier.

Turning a Shared Value Into Shared Action

Hard work is a value that connects Utahns across differences. But what it means to honor hard work—and what challenges keep people from seeing the rewards of their hard work—may look different in every community.

We invite business leaders, elected and civic leaders, faith communities, and everyday Utahns to come together across differences, listen to one another, identify a challenge that matters in their community, and explore what they can do together. The ideas below are intended as inspiration, not a formula. The most meaningful actions will come from communities themselves.

Business Leaders

Consider how employers can join with people outside the business community to help hard work translate into greater opportunity. For example, businesses might partner with faith communities, local government, nonprofits, and employees to explore locally identified challenges such as housing affordability, child care, transportation, workforce training, or pathways to homeownership.

Ideas to get you started

  1. Create or Join an Employer-Assisted Housing Program

  2. Partner with Utah Housing Corporation or local Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) to design a down-payment assistance program matched to your workforce’s income levels.

  3. Start with a pilot: even a $5,000 employer match for down payment or closing costs—forgiven over three years of employment—significantly improves retention while helping employees build equity.

We Believe in Hard Work—and in Making Hard Work Matter

Utahns come from different backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs, but we share a desire to build a better life for our families and communities. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to contribute their talents, work hard, and move forward. When we recognize one another’s contributions and remove unnecessary barriers to opportunity, hard work becomes more than an individual value—it becomes something that brings us together in building a stronger Utah.
