We Believe In Family
Being Together and Being Connected Aren’t the Same Thing
The daily rituals that strengthen children, including shared meals, bedtime stories, and face-to-face conversation, are in decline, and our kids are feeling the distance.
-
17th
worst in the nation for share of children under five who are read to every day.
-
10th
worst for families eating meals together daily—lowest of all the Mountain States.

Utah teenagers report serious emotional distress requiring mental health care.
Connection Doesn’t Happen by Accident
We don’t have to define family the same way to share a commitment to family. When we start with what we want for the people we love, we can find common ground in the future we want to build together.
Business Leaders
Bring together business leaders, workers, parents, caregivers, and community voices across backgrounds to ask: What would make this a place where our families can build a future? Co-create solutions that strengthen families across the community, around challenges such as childcare, housing, education, or economic opportunity.
Ideas to get you started
-
Protect family time in your workplace policies.
Evaluate meeting schedules, after-hours expectations, and travel demands that pull parents away from meals and bedtimes. Even small shifts—like no-meeting evenings or flexible start times—send a signal that family connection matters.
-
Offer mental health benefits that cover the whole family.
Ensure your employee benefits include dependent mental health coverage, and promote resources like the SafeUT app and 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline so employees know help is available for their children.
-
Sponsor early literacy and family connection initiatives.
Partner with programs like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and Utah Reads to put books into the hands of employees’ young children.
Elected & Civic Leaders
Bring people across political, geographic, economic, and generational differences together around a simple question: What kind of community do we want our children and families to inherit? Use that shared aspiration to find common ground and tackle a challenge affecting the community’s future.
Ideas to get you started
-
Fund statewide access to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Operation Literacy is campaigning for state funding to mail a free book each month to every registered Utah child from birth to age five. Support this initiative to address Utah’s poor ranking in reading to young children.
-
Expand school-based mental health services.
Fund the expansion of programs like Huntsman Mental Health Institute’s Behavioral Health Integration, which has placed specialists in 15 clinics across six counties.
-
Institutionalize family connection campaigns.
Make family connection campaigns year-round, not seasonal.
Faith & Community Leaders
Create opportunities for families who might not otherwise know one another to share meals, stories, traditions, and concerns for the future. Then identify something they want to make better for all families in their community—and work on it together.
Ideas to get you started
-
Make family meals a congregational priority.
Challenge families in your community to commit to a specific number of screen-free meals per week. Provide simple resources — conversation starters, meal-planning guides—and create accountability through small groups or family check-ins.
-
Launch or expand reading programs for young families.
Partner with your local library to host reading nights, build “little libraries” at your facility, or recruit volunteers to read with children in underserved neighborhoods.
Every Utahn
Connect with a family outside your usual circle and ask: What do we both want for the people we love? Find one thing you can work on together—whether strengthening your neighborhood, supporting local schools, helping young people, or creating a more connected community.
Connecting for a Better Future
Our families may look different, but the hope we have for them can bring us together. When families support families, we build a stronger Utah for the next generation.
